Painting your door doesn’t have to be a difficult task. With the right choice of paint and a little effort, you can have your door looking like new. Your door is often one of the first things people notice, so it’s a worthwhile investment—especially if you are looking to put the house up for sale.
Choosing Your Colour
The first thing is to choose your colour. In doing so, let the colours of your house be your guide. The colour of the door should match the painting of the house. Also, what impression do you want to give with your colour? Do you want to go for a bold look or do you want to keep it casual?
Preparing to Paint
Remove the hardware from the door (door knobs, hooks, hinges and anything else that can’t be painted). Also, cover any glass that is part of the door. Then, give the door a good wipe-down. You will need sandpaper, rollers, primer, newspaper (for the floors) and paint. Sand the door to smooth the surface.
Add a layer of primer to the door before painting. You can use a foam roller or paint with a brush. Then, apply a coat of paint to the door. It is best to paint in a particular order: start with bevels, panels, center stile, rails and outer stiles. You can apply a second coat if you wish. You will need a thin brush for areas that the roller or large brush may not be able to reach. The roller is great for applying an even coat on the door. Make sure you have an appropriate size for the job.
Once the paint has fully dried, reattach the hardware to the door. Clean up any mess and check to see that the paint has been applied thoroughly.
Painting your door is a fun and easy task. When you are finished, you will have a brighter-looking home. Painting, however, won’t do any good if a door needs to be replaced altogether.
