Your windows are an important part of your home’s defence system, as well as an important component of your street appeal. They are the first thing that most people notice when walking past, as well as your first line of defence against the elements. If you are thinking about replacing your windows, whether on your own or with the help of a window replacement service, and want to get the measurements beforehand, here are some steps to follow.
Measuring the width
To measure the width, measure between the jambs at three points (at the bottom, the middle and top of the window opening). You need to make sure you are measuring from the surface of the jambs, not from the parting beads or the trim strips in your window’s old opening. After you’ve taken all three measurements, use the smallest of the three when ordering your new window.
Measuring the height
To measure the height, measure from the highest point of the windowsill (the surface that is closest to the inside of your window), all the way to the top of the window opening. You are then going to need to make three measurements: one at the left side, one at the centre and one at the right side of the window. Again, as above, use the smallest of these three measurements when ordering your window.
Measuring the depth
One of the most important things to consider when measuring depth is to ignore all pulleys and parting strips, as these will be removed when the window replacement service comes to do the installation. There needs to be at least three and a quarter inches of opening depth between the inside of the window trim and the outside part of the blind stop strip. This amount of area is necessary in order for the replacement window to fit.
Ordering the windows
Once you have the above measurements, only provide the window replacement service company with the opening size, and the manufacturer will deduct the necessary amounts so that your window fits perfectly.
Whether you are going to install the windows yourself or are calling in the professionals, there are certain considerations that you need to keep in mind in order to get accurate measurements. If you measure starting at the wrong spot, you are going to end up ordering windows that aren’t going to fit, which will cost you money, time and a lot of hassle. If you are thinking about replacing your home’s windows, follow the above steps and make sure everything gets done right the first time.
